Education for directors is important. Directors play a critical role in overseeing the operations and strategic direction of an organisation. Their decisions can have a significant impact on the success or failure of the company. Given their importance, it is imperative that directors have the necessary education and training to carry out their responsibilities effectively. In this article, we will discuss the importance of director education and training.

As with any vocation, Directors, CEO’s and Chairmen should consider some formal education and training for their role. MBA programmes are excellent for general business management education but I recommend the Institute of Directors IOD Certificate and Diploma programmes. Those that complete the Diploma in Company Direction can then go on like I did, to take the Chartered Director programme and eventually becoming a Chartered Director (C Dir). This is by Royal Charter like for example, Chartered Engineer or Chartered Accountant.
While as a Fellow of the Institute of Directors, I took the Diploma programme and after passing the exams went on to become a Chartered Director in 2001. I found the whole programme very valuable. It was not just the education. It was the working in teams with other Directors and Chairmen. It was also a commitment to ongoing personal development in the strive towards becoming a better CEO or Chairman.
